Hope Awakening: Sin Cycles
Written by Jennifer Andes
“But they rebelled and grieved his holy spirit; So he turned to become their enemy, and warred against them.” Isaiah 63:10
Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.” I’m guilty of this practice; what about you? We are all insane! I’m kidding . . . mostly. As we walk (quickly) through the Old Testament, one thing stands out to me: sin cycles! The history of the Israelites can be summed up in a continuous cycle of obedience, complacency, rebellion, and repentance. Rinse and repeat.
This is why we all need a Savior! Left to our own accord, we will never get it right. Our hearts might be aligned fully with God for a time, but we fall into this pattern. In modern times, it tends to look like this: We are walking with God and all is well. All is well, so we start to get a little lazy (for lack of a better word) in our diligence with the Lord. Before long, some temptation arises that we don’t even recognize until we follow it into sin. God’s loving Spirit prompts us to recognize our sin, and then we repent because we love God. And so the cycle continues.
The Bible is a major source of encouragement as we journey through our own sin cycles. I firmly believe every Christian should read the entire Bible, repeatedly.* I know it’s tough, but reading the history of God’s people shows us how we are just like the Israelites. And we realize just how much we need Jesus. I know this is why I love the Christmas season so much! I need a Savior! All praise to God for His plan.
The first time we really see this sin cycle emerge (and perhaps the easiest illustration) is in the book of Exodus. Here’s a quick refresher. God sent Moses to free His people from bondage in Egypt. God used Moses as His vessel to perform many miraculous feats. God’s plan prevailed (spoiler alert: it always does!) and the people were free at last! However, it didn’t take long for the Israelites to look back and see their old way of life as better. Even though they had their freedom, they tired of the food God provided and longed for the foods of their bondage. They grumbled and complained, despite God’s provisions. They crafted idols when they felt abandoned. They witnessed God’s wrath, repented, and walked in obedience again.
A generation of people died in the desert because of their disobedience during the wandering. A new group of Israelites crossed the Jordan River, led by Joshua, to take possession of the land God promised them. Yet there in the plentiful, vast, promised land, the people fell into rebellion yet again.
God sent judges to lead His people. His heart is for them! The people then demanded kings, and God allowed it. These kings didn’t always follow God, and there were many who led the people astray into idolatry. God sent prophets to preach a message of repentance to His people. The prophet Joel proclaimed, “Yet even now . . . return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” (Joel 2:12)
Over and over again, we witness the cycle of obedience, complacency, rebellion, and repentance. God loved His people in spite of their continuous sin cycle. He pursued them by providing righteous and holy men to help them walk the right path. He punished them for their disobedience, but this was a loving act just as a father disciplines his child. He welcomed them back when they turned to Him with repentant hearts. Paul would later write that God said “All day long I opened my arms to them [the Israelites], but they were disobedient and rebellious.” (Romans 10:21)
God knew the world would be this way. He foresaw the sin cycles. He knew those who would be faithful to Him, and those who would walk away. Yet His love never wavered. It’s the same for us today! He loves us in our obedience and in our rebellion. He pursues us. He sent His Son into the world for us, to reconcile our sins so we have the hope of eternal life.
All praise and glory be to Him, forever and ever!
*There are a variety of resources to assist in reading through the full Bible. One of my absolute favorites is a podcast called The Bible In a Year by Father Mike Schmitz. The Bible Recap is another great book / podcast to encourage you. In 2025, I will be following along with Alabaster Co.’s “A Beautiful Year in the Bible.”
Reflection: Spend some time considering where you are right now in the sin cycle. Don’t automatically assume you are in a stage of obedience! If you find yourself spiraling toward rebellion, return to the Lord with your whole heart. He’s waiting with welcome arms!
